Effects of a gender and nutrition behavioral improve communication amid the COVID-19 crisis in Myanmar’s Central Dry Zone – Myanmar

Summary

Social actions improve interaction (SBCC) interventions on gender and diet are now commonly executed, but their effect on diet program high quality and empowerment is seldom assessed rigorously. We estimate the affect of a nutrition and gender SBCC intervention on women’s nutritional variety and empowerment in Myanmar through an especially hard period—the very first calendar year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The intervention was implemented as a cluster-randomized managed trial in 30 villages in Myanmar’s Central Dry Zone. Our analysis employs knowledge from the baseline survey applied in February 2020 and a telephone study implemented in February–March 2021 and focuses on women’s nutritional variety and sub-indicators of the venture-stage women’s empowerment in agriculture index (pro-WEAI). Two indicators of women’s empowerment―inputs to effective decisions and access to and decisions in excess of credit―improved, indicating that SBCC interventions can add to shifting gendered perceptions and behaviors even so, most of the empowerment indicators did not change, indicating that significantly of gendered norms and beliefs get time to transform. Women’s dietary range scores were better by half a meals team out of 10 in cure villages. Much more women in cure villages consumed nuts, milk, meat or fish, and Vitamin A–rich meals day by day than in control villages. We demonstrate that even in the setting of a pandemic, a SBCC intervention can be sent by means of a vary of applications, together with family visits, phone-based coaching, and voice-based schooling, that are responsive to regional and person useful resource limitations.
Gender messaging can transform some gendered perceptions but it may acquire extra time to transform deeply ingrained gender norms. Nutrition messaging can support counter the declines in dietary high-quality that would be anticipated from detrimental shocks to offer chains and incomes.
