Mikel Arteta responds to speculation linking him with Barcelona

Arsenal could be without two key players when they take on Crystal Palace on Monday night in their return to Premier League football.

The Gunners have been told who they need to sign in order to catch up and compete to league leaders Man City and Liverpool. Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League but are still some distance behind the pace-setters and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has given them some advice on the kind of players that need to be acquired this summer.

If the club are able to make it into the UEFA Champions League next season, they may need to beat Tottenham Hotspur after a potential date has been earmarked for their rescheduled fixture to take place..

Arsenal duo a doubt

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Monday night and take on Patrick Viera’s Crystal Palace.

However, the Gunners head into the game with fitness doubts over goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and right back Takehiro Tomiyasu, with both missing a behind closed doors friendly against Brentford on Wednesday afternoon. Both could feature for Mikel Arteta’s side but it is more likely that Tomiyasu is selected over Ramsdale.

“I think he will be close. He’s been training more and more,” Arteta said on Thursday of the possibility of the Japanese international featuring next week.

Carragher gives Arsenal transfer advice

Arsenal have mounted a serious top-four challenge under Arteta this season and could well be playing UEFA Champions League football before the year is out.

Should that be the case, the next step in the team’s development would be to push on further and challenge for the Premier League title. In order for the north London-outfit to do so, former Liverpool defender and now Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal’s next signings should mirror those that took Liverpool to the top, similar to the acquisitions of goalkeeper Alisson and defender Virgil van Dijk.

“They haven’t got a [Cristiano] Ronaldo. They haven’t got a [Harry] Kane,” Carragher told Gary Neville’s The Overlap Live Fan Debate.

Arsenal set for decisive Spurs showdown

Arsenal have been given a likely date for their rescheduled Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.

The north London rivals were meant to play in January but the game was postponed after an injury and Covid-19 crisis prevented the Gunners from fielding a team at the start of the year. No official announcement has been made as to when the second North London Derby will be played this season.

But the week beginning May 9 has been pencilled in for the clash to be played with major UEFA Champions League qualifying implications on the line.
